Udaipur : Two days after hundreds of villagers courted voluntary arrest in support of their demand for ‘Tehsil’ status for Kanore town, dozens of women climbed up a water tank of the PHED (public health and engineering department) in the town on Monday. More than 1000 women had gathered near the tank and demonstrated by raising slogans in support of the tehsil demand. Suddenly, few of them climbed up the stairs and refused to get down unless the collector was called to hear them, the women folk insisted. Before the administration could know what had happened, a large group had perched on the tank stairs and the protest continued for over an hour.
Besides women, youths too climbed up the tank and shouted slogans. Later police came and convinced the protestors to get down. The residents here have been continuously staging dharnas, processions and shops ‘bandh’ since last 10 days. The villagers have been demanding tehsil status since 30 years but their voices had been unheard. However, recently the government’s announcement granting tehsil status to adjoining town Bhinder, offended them. On Sunday on the occasion of Mahaveer Jayanti, the Jain community members had held a massive dharna at the main street.
“ If the government does not listen to our demand this time, the movement will take an aggressive shape” villagers warned. Bhinder and Kanore-two major areas fall under Vallabhnagar constituency and BJP rebel Randhir Singh who hails from Bhinder is the MLA. Singh had always upheld Kanore’s claim for tehsil status, however, the government’s announcement on Bhinder tehsil, came as a rude shock for the Kanore residents who have been protesting since.
